Reusing dashboard content

Overview

Reuse dashboard content by either:

  • Copying and pasting widgets and dashboards (within basic modules).

  • Publishing your modules.

All users with the right to create personal dashboards can copy and paste either individual widgets or full dashboards to accelerate the creation of new dashboards.

In addition, users with the right profile and administrators can publish Portal content for other users to share the same dashboards. The unit of sharing is the module; therefore, when a module is published, it is shared with all the dashboards and widgets that it holds.

Nevertheless, not all the users are able to see all the published modules. Users can see a particular published module only according to specific rules that depend on the users' type and their roles.

Copying and pasting a widget

Only Nexthink users with the right to create personal dashboards can copy and paste widgets. Moreover, users can only copy widgets from and paste widgets to dashboards in the PERSONAL section, because editing permissions are required to access the individual widgets and modify the dashboards. If a widget is not part of a personal dashboard, copy the dashboard to your PERSONAL section first, as indicated in the section about publishing a module below. Only those widgets that represent metrics, that is, all widgets in dashboards of the basic type of module, are copiable.

To copy a widget:

  1. Log in to the Portal as administrator or as a normal user with the right to create personal dashboards.

  2. Locate the dashboard that holds the desired widget with the help of the navigation tool on the left-hand side of the dark blue ribbon.

  3. Click the menu icon on the right-hand side of the dark blue ribbon.

  4. Select Edit content to set the dashboard into edit mode.

  5. Hover the mouse cursor over the widget that you wish to copy.

  6. Click the sprocket icon that shows up at the top-right corner of the widget.

  7. Select Copy.

The copied widget is kept in the clipboard until the user logs out or copies another widget. Therefore, the copied widget can be pasted multiple times.

To paste a previously copied widget:

  1. Log in to the Portal as administrator or as a normal user with the right to create personal dashboards.

  2. Locate a dashboard in the PERSONAL section.

  3. Click the menu icon on the right-hand side of the dark blue ribbon.

  4. Select Edit content to set the dashboard into edit mode.

  5. Hover the mouse cursor over the place where you want to add the widget. A plus sign shows up in the available spots.

  6. Click the plus sign to add a widget.

  7. Click the link at the end of the sentence that is displayed at the top of the dialog to add a widget:Please choose the type of widget you would like to add or Paste widget.

Copying and pasting a dashboard

Only Nexthink users with the right to create personal dashboards can copy dashboards of the basic type from any section (either from their own content or from published content) and paste them to modules within their PERSONAL section.

To copy a dashboard:

  1. Log in to the Portal as administrator or as a normal user with the right to create personal dashboards.

  2. Locate the desired dashboard with the help of the navigation tool on the left-hand side of the dark blue ribbon.

  3. Click the menu icon on the right-hand side of the dark blue ribbon.

  4. Select Copy dashboard.

The copied dashboard is kept in the clipboard until the user logs out or copies another dashboard. Therefore, the copied dashboard can be pasted multiple times.

To paste a previously copied dashboard:

  1. Log in to the Portal as administrator or as a normal user with the right to create personal dashboards.

  2. Locate the desired module where to paste the copied dashboard with the help of the navigation tool on the left-hand side of the dark blue ribbon.

  3. Click the menu icon on the right-hand side of the dark blue ribbon.

  4. Select Paste dashboard.

    • If a dashboard with the same name already exists in the module, the dashboard name gets the suffix Copy. Subsequent copies add an identifying number to the suffix, starting from number 2.

    • Note that this option is only enabled if there is a dashboard ready to be pasted in the clipboard.

Publishing a module

To publish a module, you need to be an administrator or a normal user whose profile explicitly allows the publication of dashboards. To publish a module, first create the module or modify an already published module by copying it to your personal content. To make a local copy of a published module in the PERSONAL section:

  1. Log in to the Portal as administrator or as a normal user with the right to create and publish Portal content.

  2. Click the module navigation tool on the left-hand side of the dark blue ribbon.

  3. Open the published module. Either:

    • Click the name of a module under a section corresponding to one of your assigned roles in My content.

    • Click the name of a module in All published.

  4. Click the menu icon on the right-hand side of the dark blue ribbon.

  5. Select the option Copy module to my content.

Once you have created the new module or modified an existing module, publish it:

  1. While viewing the module content in the Portal, click the menu icon on the right-hand side of the dark blue ribbon.

  2. Under the section MODULE, select the option Publish module.... A dialog shows up.

  3. Publish your module as new or substitute an existing module. Choose between:

    • Create new module. Type in a name for the module that is not repeated. Note that, in the list of existing modules, normal users do not see the names of those modules that were created by administrators. Therefore, there can be a name conflict even if you do not see the name that you chose for your module in the list.

    • Replace existing module. Note that only administrators can replace the modules created by other administrators.

      1. Choose the module to replace from the list.

  4. Optional: Tick the box Keep a copy in my personal content if you do not want the module to disappear from your PERSONAL section after publishing.

  5. Click Done to actually publish the module.

After publishing the module, administrators can assign the module to a role.

Seeing a published module

Normal users see only those published modules that are included in their roles inside the My content group, or modules that were created by other users wihtin the All published group.

For their part, administrators see, in addition to the published modules included in their roles, the modules published by themselves and by other administrators or normal users in the All published group.
